Why hurricanes uproot healthy trees here. A hurricane arrives as two problems at once: hours of rain that turn sandy soil above our high water table into something close to slurry, then hours of wind pushing on the crown like a sail. A dense, unthinned crown transfers that whole load to a root system whose grip is already halved by saturation, and the plate rotates out of the ground — the tree fails whole, green and alive. A crown that has been selectively thinned spills part of the same wind through its gaps, which is the entire logic of pre-season reduction pruning. It is also why topping is counterproductive: the dense regrowth it triggers rebuilds the sail thicker than before.

Does thinning a tree really help it survive a hurricane?

Selective thinning measurably reduces the wind load a crown transfers to its roots — it is the same reason sailors reef sails. It is risk reduction, not immunity: a direct hit from a major hurricane fells prepared and unprepared trees alike. The honest claim is that prep work shifts the odds meaningfully in the storms this coast sees most, which are not direct Cat 4 hits.

Which of my trees should I worry about most?

In rough order: anything dead or visibly damaged near a target; tall pines standing alone or on the windward edge; laurel and water oaks past middle age, especially with big horizontal limbs; anything whose crown overhangs the roof.
